Drugs, Drugs and more Drugs... Oh my!

The following list contains information regarding different classes of psychotherapeutic medications, the brand name by which they are known, the conditions they seek to alleviate, and possible adverse reactions to their use. It is important to note the following: This information is not intended to supplement or replace any disclosure that a qualified physician should make.


ANTI-PSYCHOTIC DRUGS: Mellaril, Moban, Navane, Prolixin, Thorazine, Haldol, Loxitane, Serentil, Trilafon, Abilify, Geodon, Stelazine, Clozaril, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel

POSSIBLE BENEFITS: These drugs alleviate manifestations of psychosis such as hitting, kicking, scratching, grabbing, causing damage to surroundings, injuring self and others, yelling, screaming, insomnia, restlessness, undressing self, hallucinations, delusions, interference with care, throwing objects, and fearful distress


POSSIBLE ADVERSE REACTIONS: Blurred vision, sedation dry mouth, drowsiness, apathy, constipation, akinesia, muscle rigidity, drooling from the mouth, photosensitivity, weight gain, edema, postural hypotension, akathisia


SPECIAL CONCERN: Seizure disorder, glaucoma, fever, chronic constipation, skin pigmentation, jaundice, tardive dyskinesia.


ANTI-DEPRESSANT DRUGS: Nopramin, Sinequan, Tofranil, Anafranil, Prozac, Serzone, Trazodone, Lexapro, Remeron, Welbutrin, Luvox, Paxil, Zoloft, Cymbalta

POSSIBLE BENEFITS: These drugs alleviate manifestations of depression such as sleeplessness, sadness, irritability, self pity, weight loss, unhappiness, loss of appetite, poor grooming, being withdrawn, crying, feeling rejected, not socializing, wishing to die, anhedonia.


POSSIBLE ADVERSE REACTIONS:Sedation dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, postural hypertension, urinary retention, tachycardia, muscle tremors, agitation, headache, skin rash, photosensitivity, excessive weight gain.


SPECIAL CONCERN:Glaucoma, heart disease, chronic constipation, lowering of seizure threshold and edema.


ANTI-ANXIETY DRUGS: Xanax, Valium, Tranxene, Ativan, Serax, Atarax, Klonopin, Buspar.

POSSIBLE BENEFITS: These drugs alleviate manifestations of anxiety such as nervousness, overconcern, restlessness, insomnia, sleeplessness, tension, and tremors


POSSIBLE ADVERSE REACTIONS: Sedation, morning hangover, ataxia, nausea


SPECIAL CONCERN:Other sedation, hypnotics, alcohol
